SAMPLE ENTRIES FROM THE 2095 WHOLE EARTH CATALOG
For this project, I used futures thinking to create sample entries for the Whole Earth Catalog from 2095 that involved music. For an item to be included in the original 1968 Whole Earth Catalog, it needed to be:
1) Useful as a tool,
2) Relevant to independent education,
3) High quality or low cost,
4) Not already common knowledge,
5) Easily available by mail.
My speculative objects fit these same criteria.
CHALLENGES
The most difficult thing about this project was the extreme distance in the future. Forecasting objects more than 70 years in the future is beyond the normal scope of any futures thinking.
Additionally, culture is the fastest of Stewart Brand's Pace Layers, which meant that virtually anything was possible for these musically focused future objects.
